JUNE 9 IN NIGERIAN HISTORY
June 9, 1998 – Major General Abdulsalami Abubakar (later General) was sworn in as Nigeria’s eighth military Head of State following the death on June 8th of the previous military leader, General Sani Abacha. Abubakar was responsible for laying the groundwork for the eventual transfer of power from the military to a democratically elected government, which was completed in May 1999.
